On 31 May, Teet Kalmus defended his master thesis “INVENTION APPLICATION PROCESS IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” (in Estonian).
One of the main success factors of the quick economic growth of the Republic of Estonia – cheap labour – has, due to quick raise in salary and wages, started to run low. The discussions held in the Estonian society have led to a common opinion that instead of contract work providing little added value, the creation of research-intensive products and services with high added value and their marketing outside the Republic of Estonia should form a basis for the prospective economic success.
As a rule the products granting high added value are directly related to the application of different forms of intellectual property and the defence of intellectual property rights. Taking into account the size of the Estonian economic area it is clear that in order to survive the international competition, the entrepreneurs in Estonia must sell their products and services in the other countries as well and be ready to defend their intellectual property rights.
The existence of good inventions makes the economy of the United States as the biggest homogenous inner market a very attractive target market for the Estonian entrepreneur. Unfortunately inventions entail the defence of intellectual property rights and therefore knowing the US intellectual property system forms an essential prerequisite of the innovative entrepreneurship.
The aim of the present Master’s thesis is, through the analysis of the using of different invention and patent strategies and through the analysis of the diverse US patent system, to compile a methodology that would help Estonian entrepreneurs to estimate the value of their innovations and use different strategies for exploiting their inventions and patents in the United States of America.
